The short answer

For a balanced first day, walk from O’Connell Street across the Liffey to College Green, continue through Dublin Castle and the medieval core, then finish around St Stephen’s Green or Merrion Square. Choose a favourite attraction for an interior visit and leave time to enjoy the streets around it.

Morning: the river and civic centre

Begin near the GPO and O’Connell Street, then cross O’Connell Bridge. The river makes Dublin’s north-south geography immediately clearer. Continue to College Green, where Trinity College faces the former Parliament House.

Midday: castle and medieval streets

Walk towards Dublin Castle and the former Dubh Linn area, then continue into the medieval core around Christ Church. The streets are close together, but allow time for surfaces, crossings and photographs. Make time for a relaxed lunch along the way.

Afternoon: Georgian Dublin

Finish through the south city towards St Stephen’s Green and Merrion Square. If you choose an indoor visit, the National Gallery’s permanent collection is free, while opening hours and temporary exhibitions should be checked directly.

  • Keep the route flexible
